Decision Making Technique

A Message from Noelyne...

One of my Coaching Associates Lisa Phillips of Amazing Coaching uses the following technique with her clients when they are stuck and finding it difficult to make a decision and I thought you would find it useful particularly in relationships with other people for example, at work.

Change, Accept or Walk Away?

CHANGE.
Is it possible to CHANGE the situation?    What options are available for change?

ACCEPT.

Is it possible to accept the situation?  What options were available to acceptance?

WALK AWAY?

Is the situation so bad that you need to walk away? In a work context, do you need to find a different job?

One of the beneficial things about this process is that it can force you to take responsibility and get out of blame mode.    Try it the next time you need to resolve an issue!

Is your past holding you back?

A Message from Noelyne...

Do you continue to punish yourself for things which have happened in the past?  Do you carry bad feelings around with you like painful baggage for years and years?  Do you deny yourself the life you truly deserve because you believe you don’t deserve good things?

Many of the people I work with in my coaching practice come to me because they want to be more successful, more confident and get what they want in life.  And I can guarantee that for each one it will be something from their past that is holding them back.  Is your past holding you back?

To be successful you need to let go of your past and start with a clean slate for today, in order to have a fantastic new future.   It’s just like planting a new garden – you have to remove some of the debris, stones and old weeds. 'Getting rid of the old to make room for the new'.  Then start planting seeds.

In my achiever's club I have lessons dedicate to letting go of the past.  Part of this is forgiving yourself and others for past events.  Doing this will make it much easier to move forward into the future. It helps you to build a solid new foundation to create the life you truly want to live.    It's not easy to create the wonderful new life you desire if you are holding on to past experiences and resentment for what has happened.  When you focus on painful relationships, broken agreements and unresolved issues you are reliving those feelings and allowing the past to exist now.

If you don’t clean up your past and make peace with it you cause emotions such as hopelessness, resentment, sarcasm, cynicism, loneliness, or emptiness.

Are you so attached to what happened in the past that you really don’t want to let it go?  Perhaps it is because you have longed for some resolution, an apology or a different outcome.  And so, instead of letting go and moving on, you choose to hold onto your pain, your grudges as you don’t want to give up on what you believe you are owed.  The problem with this approach is that if you need someone else to do something before you have closure, there is a good chance that you will never get it!  The other person probably moved on long ago and is creating a new life for themselves.  By holding on to past resentment you are continuing to allow the other person to have power over you.  The only person who suffers is you.  Are you giving this person the power to rule your life?

Holding onto your past is like collecting news paper articles from 10, 20,30, years ago and carrying them with you wherever you go.  Would you choose to read these newspapers every day going over each upsetting story in your head over and over again? Would you carry these papers with you from job to job, relationship to relationship? Would you repeat the stories in these newspapers to your friends over and over again?

Quick update

A Message from Noelyne....

I'm looking forward to spending time at home over the next few weeks.  The Training contract that I have been involved with since beginning of January has taken me away from home with overnight stays.  I've enjoyed the work so it was not too much of a hardship and I knew it was only for a short time.

However, it's going to be soooo good getting back to family life.  You tend to lose the connection with your nearest and dearest.  Things happen while you are away that you miss.  You have been in a different world, staying in hotels, mingling with business people, far away from the daily habits of family life.  Having a meal together can seem strange particularly if 'your' seat is now occupied by one of the teenagers.

I've already made a start by cleaning the whole house....yes that's another thing that rarely stays how you like it, particularly with three men in the house.  It's also my way of refocusing on domesticity rather than business.

So I'm off to cook the evening meal, much to the relief of the teens as they don't care much for processed food.

Not sure why you're doing something

A message from Noelyne....

Have you ever started something because your instinct tells you it's the right thing to do? And then 10 years later you look back and realised the true value if that decision.

I'm delivering training courses for achievement of a ILM First Line Manager Award qualification. Some of the participants are not sure why they are there. It just seemed like a good idea. It prompted me to share that I completed an NVQ in Management at level 4 in the early 90's. It was the start of a journey to many qualifications, which I am convinced have given me the edge when applying for contracts. Qualifications are important and give an indication of the quality and standard to be expected.

So continue with your learning as you never know how it may benefit you later on.

When did you last learn something new

A message from Noelyne....

I have made a career in Personal development as I'm passionate about it and have been since I was a child. I was the one who loved to revise so that I could do well in exams. I loved pouring out my knowledge onto an exam paper. It still amazes me that I didn't get into a training role until I was 38. My personal development journey started long before then. Friends laughed at my references to the most recent self help book.

It continues to this day my passion for personal development, taking on new challenges, the odd calculated risk and the continuing reference to books. Most recently Stephen Coveys 7Habits. Although I've been using the habits for many years. Another favourite is Louise Hay, You can heal your life.

Anyway when was the last time that you invested time in you? To attend a training course? Learn a new skill? Get a qualification?

Are you the best that you can be? Are you achieving your full potential? In these increasingly challenging and competitive times you need to keep your skills and qualifications up to date.

Enjoy the process of life

Feeling rejected?

A Message from Noelyne....

I have been delivering a two day training course to prepare people for the new role they are about to take.  It's part of the recruitment process and a requirement to attend prior to a contract being issued.  On the last in a series of events one of the participants shared with me that she was a last minute delegate as she had been on a reserve list.

During the course she commented that the pace was slow as she was used to a very busy working environment.  I immediately sensed that she was still feeling upset about not having been selected at the start of the recruitment.  She continued to make comments about the fact that she was a reserve throughout the two days.  On chatting to her she had assumed that her experience in a similar role 10 years ago would be enough to make her successful.  She also felt rejected.

It's an example of making assumptions and then holding on to unresourceful emotions i.e. the disappoitment or anger of being rejected.

It transpired that five other people on the course were also on the reserve list.  I would not have known by looking at them.  It was not an issue for them and they were just very happy to be called forward for the job.

Things don't always turn out how we expect and there's normally a lesson to be learnt.  The next time you feel rejected look for the lesson that you need to learn.  What do you need to do differently?  What other options are there?

Enjoy the process of life,

Tired of not feeling content with your life?

A Message from Noelyne....

Are you happy with your life? Do you live happily no matter what happens? No matter what you have or haven't got?

Or do you live wishing things were different of better? Do you live your life feeling unsettled and anxious because things aren't quite how you want them to be?

Do you wish your house was bigger or in a different location? Do you wish you could give up work or go part time? Are you unhappy with your health and energy levels?

If you are unhappy or unsettled with what you have now then it's highly likely that you will still be unhappy and unsettled when you get what you think will make you happy and settled.

Learn to be happy and settled with who and where you are now. Don't put off being happy until a future date. If you do then it will stay there i.e in the future.

Enjoy the process of life,

Noelyne Jones
